ANOTHER WIN
NEW ZEALAND HOCKEY TEAM. TOOWOOMBA ELEVEN DEFEATED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 9.0 p.m) Toowoomba (Queensland), July 27. The New Zealand hockey team played a match against Toowoomba, to-day, winning by four goals to nil. The teams were:— New Zealand.—Moore, Andrews, Parker, Clark, Joblin (captain), Bollard, Rogers, Best, Bay, Turbitt, Wellborne. Toowoomba. —Emmerson, Andrews, I. Perry, Vagg, Mclntyre, Gatfield, J. Perry, Adamson, Curran, Caldwell, Reighmuller. New Zealand won the toss, attacking vigorously till Toowoomba cleared, lack of support spoiling their chance. Again attacking New Zealand forced a penalty comer, but failed to score. Clark was showing great stick work in the face of much opposition. New Zealand’s brilliant play overcame Toowoomba, a counter-attack enabling the forwards to assault the goal vigorously, Bay scoring. A ding-dong battle continued till half-time.
New Zealand were again to the fore after the interval till a clearance by Perry took Toowoomba to the New Zealand circle, lack of cohesion preventing a score. Again New Zealand attacked and despite Emmerson’s wonderful defence Bay again broke through and scored. Continuing their offensive New Zealand pressed round the goal, Wellborne scoring. Toowoomba carried the ball to the New Zealand circle, two shots at goal miscarrying. Wellborne cleared, forcing Toowoomba back to their own goal circle. However, Emmerson was too good on defence till Rodgers scored cleverly a few minutes before time.
Andrews, Clark, Bay and Wellborne were the outstanding players.
