HITLER’S POWER

INFLUENCE INCREASING POLICY SUPPORTED BY PROFESSORS ELECTION ON SUNDAY (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.5 p.m.) Berlin, July. 27. Though they dislike some of his aims, 51 university professors have published a manifesto supporting Herr Hitler s policy of fighting the influence .of foreign races and his determination to deliver Germany from the materialistic shackles imposed by international finance. They expect Herr Hitler to purify public life and achieve the salvation of the German people. The Hitlerites have made great preparations to ensure the success of a meeting Herr Hitler is addressing today. The concentration of Herr Hitler s storm detachments had led to a revival of fears of attempted “putsch.” The story goes that if the polling results known late on Sunday show that the Hitlerites are likely to obtain 50 per cent, of the votes, a revolt may be attempted during the early hours of Monday with a view to making HenHitler Chancellor. The Reich Government, however, has issued a statement that if the “putsch” is attempted all forces will be used to defeat the adventure. Well-informed circles believe that General Schleicher will order the Reichswehr soldiers to shoot, and they will obey. The Allegemeine Zeitung foresees a new Government under Herr von Papen, including representatives of the Hitlerites. That Germany would arm to the level of her neighbours if they refused to disarm to hers was threatened by General Schleicher when broadcasting to the German people. He cited the “catastrophic failure’ of the Disarmament Conference and the insecurity of Germany, and accused France of hypocrisy because she was aware that the German forces unarmed could not oppose a single French division, still less frontier fortresses, for one day. The German Army was barely capable of the protection of its own frontiers. The only alternative was for Germany to reorganize her army, which would be done.
