OTAUTAU NOTES

METHODIST CHURCH. The quarterly meeting of the Otau-tau-Aparima Methodist circuit was held last week, when the Rev. C. H. Olds, 8.A., officiated as chairman. Votes of condolence were passed with Mrs W. T. James (Aparima), Mrs Webb (Aparima) and Mrs J. R. Corkhill (Otautau) in their recent bereavements. The Young Worshippers’ League, the Bible Class, the Sunday School, and the various departments of church activities were reported to be in a very healthy state. The finances were also reported to be in a satisfactory condition. A successful social was held in the Methodist Church on Thursday evening, when there was a good attendance of members and friends. The Rev. Challenger occupied the chair. The speaker stated that the various trusts of the circuit were all free of debt, and the members of the Ladies’ Guild were evidently anxious to have the circuit finance on a par with the trusts. The following items were greatly appreciated: Organ solo, Mrs Wesney, A.T.C.L.; humorous reading, Mr R. R. Walker; solos, Miss E. Wesney and Miss R. McFadgen; recitation, Mr W. J. Wesney. The following members were present at the usual meeting of the River Board on Tuesday evening: Messrs John Smith (chairman), John Muir, F. J. Collie, Geo. Low, D. McGregor, J H. Smith and J. G. Flett. The Hon. A. Hamilton, Minister of Internal Affairs, wrote with reference to the transference of the grant from the Opio to Otautau streams, and stated the matter would receive his attention. The chairman reported that the work on the Opio stream would be completed this week. A petition was presented from Mr T. H. Walker and several others in North Otautau asking that they be put into the second grade, as they were getting no benefit from the work which was at present being carried out on the Otautau river.—The clerk was directed to report on the matter. The following rates were struck for the ensuing year: Waikouro subdivision, class A, one penny in the £; class B, one halfpenny; class C, one farthing. Scott’s Gap subdivision, class A, one halfpenny; class B, one farthing; and class C, one-eighth of a penny. Bayswater subdivision, class A, threeeighths of a penny; class B, threesixteenths of a penny; class C, threethirtyseconds of a penny in the £. No rates were struck in Otautau subdivision.
