FIRE BOARD

YESTERDAY’S MEETING. EIGHT FIRES FOR MONTH. The meeting of the Invercargill Fire Board yesterday afternoon was attended by Messrs R. N. Todd (in the chair), M. N. Hyndman and his Worship the Mayor (Mr John Miller). The superintendent (Mr F. Simpson) reported that the brigade had received eight calls during the month, five being chimney fires, one the overheating of a bucket of tar where no service was required, one to a dwelling where fat had been overheated in the oven and one to Newburgh's Buildings where a fire broke out through a defective chimney. ‘ ‘ “In the case of the fire at Newburgh’s Buildings there was a promise of a serious blaze,” the report stated. “There was evidence that at least three outbreaks on separate floors had to be dealt with, each caused by excessive heat in the chimney which runs from basement to roof.” A good working pressure had carried water to the top floor without the use of pumps. Water damage was greatly minimized by the use of sawdust and salvage sheets were used to good advantage.
