CLIFDEN NOTES

FARMERS’ UNION. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of the Waiau division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Clifden Hall on Saturday evening, the 11th instant, Mr T. Cochrane, president, presiding over a very satisfactory attendance of members. After the customary business of the meeting was concluded a decision was arrived at whereby the Waiau branch of the Farmers’ Union intended to meet the neighbouring branches of the union and discuss various fanners’ problems. Women’s Division. On the same evening the Waiau branch of the Women’s Division held their meeting in the Clifden house, Mrs Lawson presiding over a very fair attendance of members. A box from the home science department on “Budgeting” was opened and discussed. Football. The Western Star juniors met and defeated the Ohai juniors on the Orawia grounds by 14 points to 3. In a friendly game played at Eastern Bush between Eastern Bush and Motu Motu, some very interesting and spectacular football was witnessed. The game ended in a draw, Motu Motu 3, Eastern Bush 3. Local Notes. Rabbiters are, in some eases, beginning to remove these pests to the farmers by means of poisoning. In two instances very fair catches were obtained. Although very heavy rainfall was recorded in and around the district during last week the roads were in excellent condition for traffic. This fact is undoubtedly due to the great care and work done by the local surfaceman, Mr W. Watson. The only hindrance to traffic was a swollen watercourse on the Lilburn Road.
