PLUNKET SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the local branch was held in the Plunket Room on Tuesday, 7th inst. Mrs Summers presided over a small attendance of members. The secretary advised that the new scales had come to hand, also that the proceeds from the footballers’ recent Saturday night dance amounted to £1 5/-. Euchre Party. The R.S.A. held their fortnightly euchre tournament last Wednesday evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, when between 30 and 40 players took part. The ladies’ prize was won by Mrs Bennett and the men’s by Mr J. Shaw. The booby prizes were won by Miss Wingate and Mr T. Forde. Debating Society. Last Tuesday evening the Executive Committee, Messrs L. McCaw, J. Pay, J, Falska, J. Hennessey and Barraclough, appointed by the Progressive League to control the activities of the Debating Society, met to make arrangements for the forthcoming session. Mr r„ McCaw was re-elected chairman and Mr J. Pay secretary. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £2 12/-, which is very satisfactory indeed in view of the fact that there were no funds in hand at the beginning of the session. The subscription was fixed at 1/-. The following syllabus was drawn up: Opening meeting (Question Box); prepared debate, Play Reading; prepared paper, Mayoral Elections; inter-club debate, Play Reading; impromptu debate, Lantern Lecture Banquet. General. Weather conditions during the past y eek have been particularly unpleasant. Over 2.6 inches of rain fell during this period, the heaviest fall being recorded on Monday night when 1.3 inches were recorded. Work at the new coal-pit is proceeding steadily and. requests for coal are already coming from far afield. The preliminary work of bridging the Wai-mea-mea stream is not yet completed and it is anticipated that several days will elapse before the pit is properly opened up and the coal made available to consumers.
