GORE HIGH SCHOOL

BOARD OF GOVERNORS. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Gore High School Board of Governors yesterday afternoon was attended by Messrs E. C. Smith (chairman), S. Rice, J. H. Clark, A. T. Newman, R. L. Byars, Hugh Smith, A. L. McDowell, A. H. W. Aitken and W. Gee. A letter was received from Mr A. S. Clouston, Lumsden, stating that he had expected to learn that suitable arrangements had been made to teach the Lumsden pupils sitting for their Training College entrance examination the three subjects, writing, drawing and elocution, in which they had so far been unable to receive instruction during school hours. He did not consider it fair that the town pupils and those living in fairly close proximity to the school should receive this instruction while those further afield, through no fault of their own, were unable to do so owing to their having to leave by train. The rector stated that two pupils in Lumsden were affected and with a view to meeting their cases he had previously suggested to the board that a part-time teacher in these subjects should, be appointed. The board, however, had indicated that owing to the expense involved, it could not do anything in the matter. He had therefore, taken the only other course possible, and had been fortunate in securing the services of Mr Park to teach these subjects. Mr Park was only able to do this after his own school had closed. This was too late for the Lumsden pupils to take advantage of it. It was decided to advise Mr Clouston that nothing was available from the part-time grant for instruction in these subjects. The Director of Education advised that limited supplies of typewriters were available for instructional purposes at prices quoted. The chairman stated that a number of the typewriters at present being used were very old and required replacing. The question of purchasing new typewriters was referred to the chairman and secretary for report. Rector’s Report. The rector reported that the roll at present stood at 256 as compared with 244 at the same time last year. While there had been evidences of the prevalence of influenza colds, the attendance on the whole had been quite satisfactory. The number of pupils in residence at the hostel was five boys and 15 girls.
