BLUFF NOTES

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CLUB. There has just been formed in connection with the Methodist Church a young people’s club, known as the Bluff Wesley Club, the aim being to cater for the intellectual, moral, social and spiritual welfare of its members. Meetings are being held weekly and will take a variety of forms, such as social, literary, musical and devotional evenings, while a place will be found on the syllabus for lectures, debates, play reading, etc. It is felt by the promoters that there is room in the town for such a club and the support so far received seems to justify that opinion. The opening social held last week drew an excellent attendance. Last Monday evening the first annual meeting was held, when a splendid start was made with the enrolment of 32 members, with the promise of a number more. The Rev. Athol R. Penn, who occupied the chair, outlined the aims and proposed constitution of the club, stating that while the club was to be under the control of the Methodist Church, and aimed at developing the work of that church, membership was open to all young people over the age of 14 years, irrespective of denomination or creed. The purpose was to promote worth-while social life for the young people and through it develop each side of their nature. The following officers were elected: —President, the Rev. Athol R. Penn; vice-presidents, Mesdames Beaton and Robertson, Messrs R. C. Harbord and W. L. Johnston; secretary, Miss Peggy Beaton; treasurer, Mr Jack Beaton; committee convenors Messrs T. Denny, J. Robertson and N. Johnston. The weekly night of meeting was fixed for Monday, the questions of hall and arrangement of syllabus were referred to the executive, which consists of the officers. (Next week’s meeting is to take the form of an evening of humour.) After the completion of business a short period was devoted to games, the gathering closing with a short devotional period.
