NIGHTCAPS NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) A special meeting of the Nightcaps Tennis Club was held on Tuesday evening, June 7, when Mr C. Carmody presided over an attendance of some 20 members. It was decided to hold a concert in aid of the club funds in August, and also to run a series of Paddy’s markets later in the year. A deputation from the Basketball Club waited on the meeting to apply for the use of the tennis courts for practice, stating that their club would be willing to pay for the privilege. On being assured that the courts would be kept in good order, and that basketball members were willing to assist the Tennis Club in raising funds, the meeting ultimately decided to grant the use of the courts free for the season. The death is reported from Dunedin of a former resident of this town and one of its earliest settlers, Mr Joshua Rogers. Deceased, who was well known in this district to those of an older generation, followed the occupation of bootmaker in Nightcaps in the early days, and was later employed as carpenter by the Nightcaps Coal Company. Mr Rogers removed to Dunedin with his Vzife and family some years ago, and worked there at his former occupation of bootmaking for a considerable period. Predeceased by his wife, Mr Rogers is survived by a grown-up family, most of whom reside in Dunedin.
