KAUANA NOTES

BASKETBALL. On Wednesday, June 8, the Femhills basketball girls travelled to Ohai where they were defeated by five goals to three. The teams were very evenly matched and it was only towards the close of the game that the home team succeeded in converting what looked like a drawn game, into a decisive victory. The Fernhills basketbailers seem to be particularly unfortunate in their competition matches, having lost on at least two occasions by comparatively narrow margins. When it is considered, however, that they are a new club of whom the majority of players have never till the present season played basketball, it must be conceded that they have put up a creditable performance and that certainly they have nothing to be disheartened about. Indeed players such as M. Ward, G. Calder and M. Gill, to mention only a few, would be worthy of a place in any B grade club. The local footballers met the Hokonui team on Fernhills grounds on Saturday. Weather conditions were not ideal for the game, wet grounds and an occasional drizzly shower combining to make heavy going and a greasy ball. In spite of this, however, there was a display of fairly creditable football, especially among the v.siting backs, where some fast passing rushes were initiated only to break down on account of the difficulty in handling the ball. The forwards were evenly matched. At the line-outs, G. Braithwaite, for Fernhills, got the lion’s share of the ball, but Hokonui were superior in the scrums, chiefly on account of the failure of the home forwards to pack well and use their weight. The scores were: Hokonui 11, Fernhills 0. Tries were scored by T. Paterson. Burke and McLean. Robb converted Burke’s try, but failed with the other two kicks. Players worthy of mention for Fernhills were: Forwards, G. Braithwaite, J. McFetrich, J. Aitchison; backs, R. Ward, T. Price, J. Rabbitt. Mr W. Moylan controlled the game.
