AMERICAN ZONE FEN/ffi AUSTRALIANS LOSE AW MATCHES SHIELDS BEATS CRAWFORD (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) Philadelphia, May 30. The American zone final of the Davis Cup competition between the united States and Australia was won by the United States by five matches to nil. Details of the singles played to-day are as follows: Shields V. Crawford. F. Shields (America) defeated J. Crawford (Australia) 6-4, 7-5, Crawford was slow in getting started. In the first two sets he opened the service and lost three games in a row. His strokes would not come off. Cowford won the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth games, when he steadied down, but his play was too patchy and Shield, won the set. _ _ , Shields took a commanding lead in the second set, winning the first four games and then quickly running up the lead to 5-1. But the Australian, finding himself, drew level. His stroking was perfect. He was, however, unable to continue the pace and the American won the set. .... Crawford rose to great heights in the third set. He won the first game by love on his service and then broke through Shields’s service in the fourth with sizzling returns on which the American was hardly able to jnit b’ s racquet. Crawford secured a 3-1 lead. Shields, making a desperate rally, won the next two games, evening the score, Each then held his service until Crawford was at top form in the two final games, when he won a long drawnout volleying contest. The fourth set was a repetition of the Australian’s superlative play. Crawford, after the score had stood at 2-2, captured the next three games and ran out the set on his own service in the ninth. The terrific pace, however, had taken its toll on Crawford, and Shields quickly ran out winner of the fifth set. Hopman Defeated. E. Vines (America) defeated H. Hopman (Australia), 6-2, 9-11, 6-4, 6-4. Vines broke through Hopmans service in the first game, but the Australian returned the compliment, evening the score at 2-2. The American took the next four games, the Australian double-faulting, driving out and netting. Hopman showed an extraordinary capacity for attack in the second set. When the games were 3-3 the Australian tried a change of pace, alternating soft with fast shots and badly confusing the American. When both men seemed tired Hopman spurted, taking the 19th game, to love and quickly running out winer of the set. During the third set Hopman, still attacking desperately, took the lead several times. However Vines, obviously tiring, finally crashed through after ten minutes’ rest. Hopman won the first and third games of the fourth set, then Vines won three games on end. Hopman rallied sufficiently to win the seventh and ninth games, then Vines won the tenth and the match.
