FAMOUS WAR “ACE”
MEMBER OF FRENCH AIR FORCE. VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, May 30. A member of the French Air Force and a distinguished war “ace,” Captain J. R. Roques, who is on a world tour, arrived in Wellington to-day by the Monowai from San Francisco.. He is on leave and will spend a week or two in the Dominion before sailing for Sydney en route to Java, Singapore and French Indo-China. Captain Roques was a lieutenant in the French Flying Corps during the war and saw service from 1915 until the termination of hostilities. He is a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, the highest decoration that can be bestowed on anyone in France, and holder of the Military Medal, Croix de Guerre and one Belgian decoration. During the war he brought down six German aeroplanes. Several times he came into conflict with the famous German “ace” Baron Richthofen and his squadron.
