ABOUT PEOPLE.

MINISTERIAL. The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. C. E. MacMillan arrived in Dunedin last night and will open the Winter Show to-day.—Press Association message. Mr J. Hensley, managing director of the Southland Silver Beech Company, Limited, left for the north by the express on Sunday evening. Miss 0. H. McGradie left by Friday’s express for Ohakune, where she has been appointed assistant teacher at the Umumuri School. She commences her duties to-morrow. Mr A. R. Woods, who for the past two years has been a member of the Invercargill branch of Butterworth Bros., returned to Dunedin yesterday, the branch having been closed. The Rev. Dr E. N. Merringion, Master of Knox College, who has been conducting anniversary services at Knox Church, Ness street, left on his return to Dunedin by yesterday afternoon’s Mr D. H. Dopson, who has been appointed Town Clerk of Eketahuna, was yesterday met by his associates and presented with a suitcase. The Town Clerk (Mr C. L. Grange), the chief accountant (Mr J. E. Taylpr) and other members of the staff testified to Mr Dopson’s many good qualities. Mr Dopson leaves for Eketahuna thia morning. At a meeting of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, Mr George W. Reid, of Dunedin, was unanimously, selected to represent the manufacture ers of New Zealand at Ottawa. Mr, Reid is a member of the Railway, Board and has taken a prominent part, in the work of the Dunedin Manufac-j turers’ Association and also of the) Manufacturers’ Federation.—Welling-) ton Press Association message. The managers and local represents-' lives of the various insurance companies took the opportunity at a luncheon in the Federal yesterday of farewelling Mr D. H. Thomson, who has retired from the management of the Invercargill branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company. At the same time a welcome was extended to Mr R. A. Wilson, Mr Thomson’s successor. Mr A. G. Seddon presided. The toast of “The Guest” was proposed by Mr C. F. A. Jones and Messrs R. N. Todd, J. B. Reid, W. R. Mabson, R. S. Alsweiler and T. L. Seator also spoke. Mr Reid proposed a toast to Mrs Thomson. Mr Jones expressed regret at Mr Thomson’s departure and congratulated him on his well-earned retirement. In welcoming Mr Wilson, Mr Todd said it was a case of welcoming him back to Invercargill, and he desired to congratulate him on his appointment
