IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY Waipiata Sanatorium Appeal. In connection with the Red Cross Society’s appeal on behalf of the Waipiata Sanatorium patients, further donations are acknowledged of parcels of books from Skene Bros., Miss Lyons and Mrs Thompson. * * • .• Improvements to Main Road. , Improvements are about to be carried out on the main InvercargillDunedin highway between Arthurton and Waipahi. This portion is at present comparatively narrow and contains numerous potholes. * A Mild Autumn. As evidence of the exceptional mildness of the autumn there are many fruit trees throughout Southland at the present time bearing blooms. In a South Riverton garden a second crop of pears is forming on one tree. A Baby Lamprey. An unusual fish in the form of a tiny lamprey, about three inches long, was recently secured in the Waikiwi stream and sent to Mr George Jaquiery for identification. The fish appears to be thriving in a jar of water and is rapidly changing colour to conform with its surroundings. * * Supplies of Firewood. Arrangements for the providing of firewood for the unemployed in lieu of transport to and from work are being pushed forward rapidly and the first deliveries will probably be made within a few days. At first the wood will be secured from waste trees in Queen’s Park, but later deliveries will have to be secured further afield. Caroline-Josephville Road. According to advice received from the chairman of the Southland County Council (Mr W. Norman), 30 unemployed men are to be engaged on road construction work on the CarolineJosephville road by way of the Saddle. Unemployed men are also to be put on construction work on the road leading to the Lora Station. » * • ♦ Riverton-Colac Bay Road. Owing to the heavy rainfall recently, the road at Tihaka, on the route between Riverton and Colac Bay, is in very bad order. The secretary of the Southland Motor Association (Mr J. S. Dick) advises that motorists should take the detour road through the Longwoods which emerges at Lake George. # # Prospecting in the Longwoods. At the present time a good deal of prospecting for gold is being carried out in the Longwood ranges, which in the past have yielded some rich deposits of the precious metal. It is now some 50 years ago since Mr H. Ward was fortunate in unearthing a nugget of gold valued at £3OO in the vicinity of the Arethusa. It is stated that a good reef exists in this locality, but so far only leaders have been discovered. Old miners of’the district believe that the main reef when discovered will yield a handsome return. * * ♦ • Store at Winton Entered. During Sunday night the Winton branch of the Single Profit Stores was entered, but the intruders failed to find the safe and only tobacco, and possibly cigarettes, were stolen. The effort to open the building was a determined one. It appears that an attempt was first made to gain admission by the main entrance —a front door off the street with two glass windows let in. Portion of one of these windows was broken, and this enabled the intruder to put his hand through and unfasten the snib. However, a second lock on the door blocked admission to the building through this entrance. The intruder then apparently went round to the rear of the building, where almost two-thirds of the lower pane of a window was removed, a glass cutter having been used. The intruder must have cut his hand, as a bloodstained apron was found on the premises. The till, which was open, contained only four threepences, which were not touched. The building was locked at the close of business on Saturday evening and the burglary was discovered on Sunday by the manager.
