TIMBER SUPPLIES.

To the Editor. Sir, —According to a recent report in our local papers 160 odd timber merchants in England decided to buy Soviet timber. New Zealand millers are nonplussed. Seemingly repudiation is a great success! Why all the Ijss about Mr Lang? Apparently he knows vhich side of the bread the butter may be applied!—Nuff said! A day or two ago the Press tried to convey to the public that a certain business was held up for Heart Rimu—in fact made it appear than New Zealand millers were unable to fulfil the contract. The position is that timber was rotting in yards, prices were hawked, and eventually merchants that could have carried out the specilication in accordance with architect’s desire, were debarred from competing. Until our achitects’ minds are sympathetic towards local millers and there is a tendency to them on behalf of builders generally, millers will be up against it. Our local Southland and Otago Co.-Op. Timber Company could have entered into a bond and guaranteed delivery within seven days. If a builder receives a ridiculously low price from an unassociated miller that has no warranty of carrying out his obligations, why should the millers be blamed as a whole? It is men of this sort that create dissension in business.—l am, etc., SOUTHLAND MILLER.
