214 KILLED IN AMERICA. HEAVY PROPERTY LOSS. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) New York, March 22. A message from Birmingham (Alabama) states that freakish March tornadoes killed at least 214 persons in five southern states on Monday and early on Tuesday. The death list .grew during the night and, as the communications were cut off by wind and rain, the restored communications at dawn brought reports of additional fatalities from the rescue parties searching the wreckage. There are 169 dead in Alabama, 30 in Georgia, 12 in Tennessee, two in Kentucky and one in South Carolina. The property loss is heavy, and hundreds of people are injured. MOUNTING DEATH ROLL. (Rec. 7.10 p.m.) New York, March 22. The tornadoes in five southern states left 275 dead and perhaps 2500 injured. Late to-night the information was revealed that more than two score widely scattered communities were affected. In Alabama 220 are dead and 2200 injured, in Georgia 34 dead and 150 injured, in Tennessee 17 dead and 100 injured, in South Carolina 2 dead and 25 injured, and in Kentucky 2 dead, the injured not being estimated.
