BALFOUR NOTES

TEA ROOMS FOR SALEYARDS. (From Our Correspondent.) Immediately after the stock sale on Thursday afternoon the directors of the Saleyards Company held a meeting to consider tenders for the erection of a building suitable for use as a tearoom. Mr E. W. Stevens (chairman) presided over the following directors: Messrs F. Gluyas, W. Orr, J. Liddell, M. Rasmussen, J. W. Parsons, P. J. Mulqueen, A. Rasmussen and A. L. Kay (secretary). As the tenders received were all in excess of the amount voted for the building, it was decided to decrease the size from 30ft by 12ft to 20ft by 10ft and call fresh tenders, including the instalment of a pumice boiler. Various local organizations wrote applying for permission to run luncheon booths at sales, and permission was granted, the bodies to arrange among themselves the order in which each body has the right to cater. The meeting also decided that a local ram and ewe fair be held on April 7. The annual St. Patrick’s dance, held on Thursday evening in aid of the local church funds, proved a success both socially and financially. The attendance was good considering the number of similar attractions elsewhere, and a happy time was spent. Bain’s orchestra supplied excellent music and Mr Savage controlled the dancing. On Friday evening, March 18, the home of Mr aryl Mrs Pringle, Balfour, was the scene of great merriment when some fifty young people and old friends assembled for a “knick-knack” party in honour of Miss Roy on the eve of her approaching marriage. During the evening the younger members indulged in games and dancing, while the older folk enjoyed a quiet game of cards. After partaking of supper, Miss Pringle, ably assisted by Mr Fraser, whose spicy comments added flavour to the business in hand, opened the parcels, disclosing many useful presents. Musical honours to the guest of the evening were followed by a speech by Mr J. Roy, who replied on behalf of bis sister, and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” with cheers for Mr and Mrs Pringle brought a very pleasant party to a close.
