WAIKAKA NOTES

HARVESTING IN PROGRESS. (From Our Correspondent.) Owing to beautiful weather prevailing the crops are now all ripe and most of them are being harvested. Almost all the crops are very heavy this year and the same is the case with the turnips. All the paddocks are green and the appearance of the country in general is very healthy. As the Women’s Institute was short of funds the women decided to stage a concert which took place on Friday evening. In brief opening remarks, Mrs D. McKenzie, president of the Women’s Institute, outlined the origin and aims of the institute. After welcoming everyone present, Mrs McKenzie read the institute prayer during which the audience stood. The programme was as follows:—Opening remarks, Mrs D. McKenzie; pianoforte solo, Audrey Cullen (recalled); solo, Mrs D. Stewart (recalled) ; musical item, “Wedding of the Painted Doll,” school children (recalled); dialogue, Institute members; solo, Mr E. Cummings (recalled) ; recitation, “Aunt Doleful,” Miss A. Henderson (recalled) ; solo, Mr D. Pringle (recalled) ; recitation, “If I Were a Man,” Mrs Cullen (recalled) ; solo, Mrs J. Cooper (recalled) ; solo, Mr W. Watson (recalled) ; dialogue, “Aunt Fanny’s Friend,” Institute members; solo, «”The Sunshine of Your Smiles,” Miss Lawrenson (recalled) ; step dance, Miss Miller (recalled) ; solo, Mrs J. Cooper (recalled) ; pianoforte duet, Mrs Johnston and Mias E. Cummings (recalled) ; solo, Mr D. Pringle (recalled) ; solo, Mrs D. Stewart (recalled); “Institute Song,” members. During the evening the accompanists were Misses Benfell, E. Cummings and C. Corcoran.

Supper, supplied by the institute members was then dispensed. Mr A. Burns officiated in the capacity of M.C. for the dance which followed and kept the party going with a swing. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs Johnston and Miss E. Cummings.
