TECHNICAL COLLEGE

OLD STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Southland Technical College Old Students’ Association states: — The membership is still on the increase, there being 175 town and 50 country members, making a total of 225. Both socially and financially the past year, has proved the most successful in the history of the association. After grants amounting to £3O were made, there is a credit balance of £lO 2/6 on the year’s working and a bank balance of £3B 0/3-. During the year the sum of approximately £l3 was expended in the purchase of crockery, and 'we are pleased to report that this item has more than saved the initial expenditure already, and we are therefore handing over to the new committee a very valuable asset. At last year’s annuid meeting the sum of £5 was donated to the Earthquake Fund. Instead of the usual £5 5/- to the college sports fund, the committee this year decided to present the same fund in the form of special prizes to go to the leading athlete in each of the college sporting activities. Another, departure from the usual medals presented at the break-up was the donating of two old students’ scholarships valued at £1 10/each.

The undermentioned cups and grants were made to the affiliated sports clubs: Ladies’ hockey, cup valued £1 10/-; men’s hockey, cup valued £1 10/-; swimming, two cups valued £3, cheque £1 15/-; basketball, cup valued £1 10/-, cheque £1 10/-; cricket, cheque £6. The usual round of social functions was held, and again the dances proved the most popular form of entertainment. By the introduction of various novelties and special decorations, together with a more strict control of the invitation list, the committee was enabled to further popularize the dances, and so secure a great success, both socially and financially on this part of the association’s programme. The grand fancy dress ball created a record both in attendance and financial returns. The annual dinner was very well attended, and the debit balance for this function was reduced to £lO 15/6, this being the lightest loss recorded since the re-organization of the association.

Two teams were entered in the men’s hockey competition, both acquitting themselves very creditably. The A’s were runners up in the seven-a-side competition. The Basketball Club is now approximately 40 strong. The past year proved to be most successful, the junior and third grade teams winning their competition and the A’s carrying off the knock-out contest.. This club contributed five senior and three junior representatives to the Southland Basketball teams. Commencing the season well by holding an extremely successful carnival, the Swimming Club is already assured of a substantial increase in membership. The roll at present stands at 60. The championships have not yet been decided, but the club is confident of holding their own. The Cricket Club has three teams in various competitions. Two of these are in leading positions whilst the third is in a good position. Before the change of the half-holiday in the middle of the season, Collegiate won the Wednesday ladies' hockey competition. There were two teams in the Saturday games, but while both upheld the reputation of the club, neither was successful in attaining the top of the ladder. Although the long expected O.S.A. FootbaJl Club has not yet come into existence, the formation of this branch of sport, is occupying the minds of several enthusiasts. Congratulations are extended to Mr George Purdue, the first old student to obtain an All Black cap.
