WAR FUNDS

SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the council of the War Funds Association was held on Friday, and was attended by 12 members. The Rev. J. Chisholm presided. The secretary reported the position with regard to Flock House, and the matter was held over for action by the main committee. The chairman referred to the proposed cut in economic pensions and pointed out that this recommendation, if carried out, would throw many claims upon the war funds which could not well be avoided. A general discussion on the subject took place and it was eventually decided no action be taken. Main Committee. The monthly meeting of the main committee was held immediately following the council meeting. Present: Mr J. Giikison (Invercargill) in the chair, the Rev. J. Chisholm (R.S.A., Invercargill), Messrs C. Bennet (Gore), F. M. Murray (R.S.A., Gore), D. Cuthbertson (Invercargill), R. H. Scott (Lumsden), T. Pryde (Invercargill), H. E. Niven (Edendale), J. A. Stirling (Fortrose), J. S. A. McDougall (Bluff). D. McDonald (Limehills) and A. H. Cockburn (Mataura). An appropriate statement of the financial position to date was received and approved as follows: Investments, £23,300; outstanding advances, £4179 10/1; on current account, £lO9O 5/0; receipts since last meeting, interest, £29 16/7; donation, £100; Government debentures, £500; refunds, £127 19/5; totalling £757 16/-. Expenditure over the same period: Relief grants, £283 1/-; advances, £123 3/5; office rental, £5 8/4; stationery, £lO 1/3; travelling expenses, £2 17/-; general expenses, £42 7/8; totalling £468 17/4. Excess of receipts over expenditure, £2BB 17/4. In connection with the statement it was pointed out that a portion of the large credit balance consisted of investment of £5OO which had matured; proceeds of which were awaiting reinvestment and it was recommended that the money be placed on deposit in a suitable institution in the meantime. The secretary reported to the meeting on the Flock House proceedings, and gave a resume of the position. The Southland allocation of trainees was four, and the finance required would be £lOO per annum Members considered it was doubtful whether the facilities for training at Flock House, valuable though they no doubt are, were sufficiently appropriate to Southland conditions to justify the association in taking any such action in this district. The secretary was therefore instructed, on the motion of Mr Niven seconded by Mr Bennet, to advise the Returned Soldiers’ Association that this association was taking no action and that that body might take such action as it deemed appropriate. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on Friday. May 6. There will be no meeting in April.
