LOCAL BODY RATES

LEGISLATION FOR REMISSION. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, March 21. Would the Prime Minister bring down legislation this session to give local bodies power to remit or postpone collection of rates? Mr W. Nash asked in the House of Representatives this evening. Local bodies had been given that power, he added, but only until the end of 1931. The Government intended to extend such provisions to apply to the present year, the Hon. G. W. Forbes said. EXTENSION OF TIME PERMISSION TO POSTPONE PENALTY. Christchurch, March 21. The Government has promised the Christchurch City Council that legislation will be introduced to validate the extension of time for the receipt of rates without the addition of the 10 per cent penalty. The Finance Committee of the council has given instructions that rates may be received up till March 31 without penalty being added. About 31 per cent of the rates remain unpaid and to-morrow was the last day for payment.
