BUSHCRAFT EVENTS

FIXTURE AT BROWNS. The Browns Hall was packed on Friday evening when the ground’s committee staged a bushcraft demonstration and concert. Great interest was taken by the public in the various events and the competitors gave a splendid display of chopping and sawing. In the youths under 18 years’ chop, six competitors faced the starter and judging by the display given by some of the youths, the time is not far distant when they will have to be reckoned with at the various bushcraft meetings. The winner, Ray Eggleton, chopped well and was loudly applauded for his effort. In the 1-lin. maiden chop, some twelve axemen faced the starter. The winner, showed splendid judgment and was applauded on his welldeserved victory. The main event of the evening, the open chop, was responsible for some splendid exhibitions of chopping and many very close finishes were witnessed. R. Anglem with one second handicap, defeated R. Anderson (6sec) by half a second for the prize money. In the sawing event Anglem and Fraser registered fastest time, but F. Butcher and Knight gained the prize money. A very interesting event during the evening was an exhibition of sawing between the Misses Robb' and Messrs Bell and Frisby. The Misses Robb had no difficulty in gaining the verdict over the other pair.

During the evening a splendid concert arranged by Messrs Lilley and Wilson, of Winton, was greatly appreciated by the public. The work of Messrs Norman (timekeeper) and Cocker (handicapper) left nothing to be desired. The starter, Mr J. North, carried out his duties in a very able manner and the supervisors of the events, Messrs H. Porte, J. Smith and R. Butcher, put through the various events with commendable promptness. A dance was held after the concert and the general opinion was that the committee should stage a similar function in the near future.
