WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

THE GORE BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Gore Women’s Institute was held in the Soldiers’ Club rooms on Saturday afternoon. Mrs E. G. Wilson occupied the chair, and there was an attendance of 26 members. The annual report stated that of the nine competitions held during the year no fewer than three firsts and seven seconds had been carried off by one energetic and original members, Mrs Fisher, who thus topped the fist of the prize-winners. The roll stood at 46; several members left the district during the year, but new members filled the ranks. An outstanding event took place on May 29 last, when the institute celebrated its first birthday, which took the form of a banquet in the Gaiety Hall. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president stated that the branch had had a very successful year, and a great deal had been accomplished. The report was an excellent one, and she was very well satisfied with it. Thanks were duo to both the secretary and the treasurer. The subscription was only a very small one, and there was no chance of piling up a big balance. The speaker congratulated Mrs Fisher on her success in the various competitions held during the year. < Mrs Bacon seconded the motion, and the report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted.

The following were elected as a committee: Mesdames R. Fisher, J. S. Robbie, J. Craigie, J. Conoily, E. G. Wilson, W. Peir—son, Familton, H. E. Bacon, G. Mitchell and C. M, Wilson. From this committee the president, vice-presidents, secretary and treasurer have to be chosen. Mrs E. G. Wilson was re-elected president unopposed, and the election of the rami uning office-bearers was postponed.

Miss R. I. V. Aitken made a request that games and reading material in the shape of old magazines, etc., be left with the secretary of the R.S.A. to be forwarded to the ex-soldiers’ camp on the WaikawaCurio Bay road.
