“PANDORA’S LEAP.”
Sir, —“Pandora.” Ah yes. “Pandora” : A beautiful woman fashioned by Vulcan and animated by Minerva. On her each god and goddess of Olympus bestowed a separate charm, and sent trom Heaven to earth to punish man for his audacity in thinking he could wield the fire of Jove. “Pandora.” Ah yes. I remember, allowed her box to be opened by Epimetheus and all the good things escaped and went back to Heaven, while the evil things were left to infest and plague the earth. A very serious business, Mr Editor, for poor “Pandora.” And to-day she is among the wolves of the correspondence columns of the Southland Times, praying to “Slim Jim” for wisdom and enlightenment regarding the income, of New Zealand. The lady also takes me to task for using the word “get” so often, and says it isn’t good English. I am sorry, Mr Editor, that "Pandora” has displayed so much ignorance and for her edification I may tell her that I am writing from the “Bush and bogs” of the backblocks and I am writing of cows and clodhoppers, the raw rough cut diamonds, the backbone of any nation, the “Primary Producers.” If “Pandora” wants me to write of the “Cloths and clowns of the costly colleges” I will be pleased to accede. I would like her to name which language she would prefer. In conclusion, sir, I beg to say that I have made a statement that is correct. To be polite “Pandora” and her companions, “Cinders and Cynic,” must accept, or prove that I am wrong. The onus is on them. “Old Jean,” who is ever ready with a bit of advice to the weak, wishes me to advise “Pandora” “to look before she leaps and avoid the limp.” I am, etc., SLIM JIM.
