AMATEUR SPORTS

MEETING AT WINTON. EVENTS KEENLY CONTESTED. (From Our Correspondent.) Favoured with ideal weather conditions, the final amateur athletic meeting of the season run under the auspices of the Winton Amateur Cycling Club, took place on the Winton Domain on Saturday afternoon. Excellent entries were received in both the running and cycling events, with the result that all the races were keenly contested. There was only a moderate attendance of the public present, and it is doubtful if the gathering will turn out a financial success. As the proceeds of the meeting were to go to the Invercargill cyclist, R. Barrett, who was injured in a race at Winton recently, this state of affairs is to be regretted. On each occasion a representative field took place in the cycling events, of which there were three. The Winton rider R. Souness distinguished himself by accounting for the half-mile and the mile events. In both cases he gave first-class exhibitions, and justified the opinions of Dunedin critics that he is the best rider in Southland at present. Prior to Saturday's meeting Souness's placings at the various meetings in the province this season were as follows: Two firsts, 16 seconds, nine thirds. Dillon rode a fine race in the final of the half-mile and was unlucky in being beaten by Souness just on the tape after leading the field for the two laps. The Invercargill rider Bloy, rode a well-judged race when he was given the decision from Johnstone in the two-mile event. The running events also attracted numerically strong fields, the majority of the competitors being Invercargill competitors. Pierson received an ovation when he won the 100 yards off scratch and was clocked at lOsec. dead. louden off 14 yards prevailed in the 220 by a narrow margip from Derbie and Pierson. The Winton runner, D. McKenzie, was a fairly easy winner in the half-mile, while he also gave a good exhibition when he ran second to Moyle (Invercargill) in the mile event. The 120 yards’ hurdles was an interesting contest, when Pierson (scr) and Derbie (6yds) dead-heated for first place. The ladies’ 75 yards event went to Miss A. M. McLeod, while she also gained the decision in the 100 yards’ event. The results of the day’s events were as follows; —: CYCLING. ONE MILE HANDICAP.—R. Souness (Winton) 15yds 1, Johnstone (Invercargill) syds 2, A. Hagerty (Winton) scr 3. Time, 22min. 36sec. Also started: D. Moore (15yds), Dillon (40), Shaw (85), Bailey (85), Gilmour (85). The cycling track was in excellent condition with the result that fast times were the order of the day. Johnstone took charge at the commencement of the final round, but could not see the journey out, and allowed Souness, who finished exceptionally well, to win by a wheel length, with Hagerty a similiar distance back in third berth. Moore was close up fourth.
