FIRM FAVOURITE
PHAR LAP IN MEXICO STRENUOUS PERIOD OF TRAINING • JOCKEY VERY CONFIDENT (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 7.45 p.m.) Agua Caliente, March 17. Six of the most prominent horses entered for the big handicap on Sunday worked out against time on Thursday. Phar Lap easily ran through threequarters of a mile in Imin 20sec, his performance firmly entrenching him in the favourite’s position. Those in charge of Phar Lap's training said he had been put through a more strenuous period of preparation for this handicap than for any races in Australia. Spanish Play did a mile in Imin 43sec easily and Marine covered nine furlongs in 2min 2-ssec. The Australian jockty, W. Elliott, says there is nothing else for the handicap but Phar Lap. “I will just give the big horse his head,” he declared, “and let him run as he likes.” The turf authorities are of the opinion that Elliott is as good as the best American riders.
