BLUFF BOROUGH

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, his Worship the Mayor (Mr T. F. Doyle) presiding over the following: Councillors A. E. Budd, N. W. McGorlick, A. C. McKillop, H. M. Joss, W. T.' White, R. C. Harbord and W. H. C. Johnston. Before the ordinary business of the meeting commenced the Mayor made feeling reference to the recent deaths of Mrs 1. W. Parry and Mr Henry Lee. The deceased, his Worship said, had been residents of Bluff for many years and were held in the highest esteem by their fellowtownsfolk. For a period of eight years Mr Lee had faithfully served the borough as a councillor and had been prominent in all movements having as their object the advancement of the town’s interests. Mrs Parry had been noted for her many fine qualities and it was with deep regret he (the speaker) had heard of her death. He moved that a motion of condolence with the relatives of the deceased be recorded. This was carried, members standing in silence. The reports and recommendations of the various committees were approved and adopted subject to the proposal to erect another street light on Ward’s Parade being referred back to the electric light committee for further consideration. In a communication received from Mr James Forde application was made for a permanent street level fronting his property on Barrow street. The matter was referred to the works committee, latter to inspect same and report to the council. An application was received from Messrs J. Walker and Son for permission to erect a dwelling in Foyle street. —Granted, subject to a locality plan being submitted. They were granted permission to carry out additions to the Masonic Hall. The Bluff Harbour Board wrote stating that it would allow the Fire Brigade water for wet practices subject to certain conditions. After discussion the council decided that in view of the terms being too drastic the offer would be declined.

The price quoted by Messrs Nicholson and Son for the supply of fifty castings for Town Hall seats was accepted, subject to the extra cost of strengthening on lines suggested by the council being satisfactory. The Town Clerk (Mr H. A. Ferguson) in his monthly report on the finances of the borough stated that receipts for the month amounted to £2566 8/- and expenditure to £776 16/-. The report regarding borough rates disclosed that the amount col-

lected to February 26 was £4039 16/of a total of £4971 7/6—equal to 81 per cent, of the whole. The amount outstanding was £931 11/6. The Mayor reported having attended as a member of the deputation arranged by the Morrinsville Borough Council which recently met the Minister of Lands (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) in Wellington to discuss certain sections of the Valuation of Land Act. His Worship made a comprehensive statement of proceedings and at the conclusion was thanked by Councillor Harbord on behalf of fellow-members for the manner in which he had placed details before them. The Mayor further reported on the work of the deputation from the Bluff Council, of which he was a member, that recently met the Southland County Council to discuss the matter of the former supplying Bluff metal for main highway work.
