OTAUTAU NOTES

FARMERS’ UNION. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a largo attendance at a meeting of the Aparima branch of the Farmers’ Union, held in the supper room of the Town Hall on Saturday evening. Mr John Evans (president) occupied the chair, while Messrs E. K. Sim (provincial president), Niederar (organizer), Merrick (who had taken oyer the duties of Mr Robinson) and J. R. Haigh (Waipango) were also in attendance. Before proceeding with the business the chairman referred in feeling terms to the deaths of Messrs E. J. and J. A. Dickson, the former having been an enthusiastic member of the branch. He moved a motion of condolence with the relatives, which was carried in the usual manner. A letter was read from Mr W. T. James, member for the Aparima riding on the Wallace County Council, with reference to the request of the branch for lower rates, the writer stating that it was likely this would be acceded to during the incoming year, more especially with regard to Aparima riding. Messrs E. K. Sim and Niederor addressed the meeting, the. latter stating the Aparima branch had 48 members, while 29 new mem ■ bern hud been obtained. He paid a generous tribute to the assistance received from Messrs Evans (president), Ayton (secretary) and several other members. Ho also stated that the president of the branch had had 25 years' experience in connection with the affairs of the Farmers’ Union. The speaker also said they were also greatly indebted to the members of the Womens Division, whose good work had greatly assisted the Farmers’ Union. Mr Haigh gave an interesting and instructive address on the Douglas credit, proposals, at the conclusion of which ho was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Progressive League. Ten members were present at the monthly meeting of the Progressive League on Monday evening, when Mr A. Fisher (president) occupied the chair. A sub-committee, comprising the pres: dent, Messrs Ballam and Baker, was set up to secure top-dressing and arrange cartage, utilizing men who owed a day's work in payment of labour for money from the sports meeting, the subsidy from the Athletic Society to pay for the cartage, and the soil to be dumped and spread at a later date.

The secretary, Recreation Improvement Committee, notified that the committee was disbanding, and thanked the members of the league for their assistance during the time the committee was in existence. He recommended the need of permanent entrance gates to the recreation ground from the eastern end of Kendal street as a useful work the league may consider undertaking. —The recommendation was approved for future execution when funds wero available.

It was decided to take the necessary steps to hold the Winter Show. Euchre.

There was a good attendance at the first of the series of euchre socials run in aid of the unemployed. Mr G. Batchelor won the men’s prize, with Mr P. Sheridan runner-up. Three ladies tied for the ladies’ prize ,Mesdames Saxelby, W. E. Pulley and P. Sheridan, Mrs Pulley winning in the play-off Mrs Saxelby was runner-up. River Board.

The adjourned monthly meeting of the River Board was held in the board room on Tuesday evening, when the following members were present: Messrs John Smith (chairman), John Muir, Geo. Low, P. G. Dahlenburg, John Flett and F. J. Collie. Mr F. J. Collie reposed that some protective work on the Aparima river near Mr Malcolm's property was required, and it was left in the hands of the members of the Bayswater subdivision to have this attended to. Croquet Afternoon. Beautiful weather was experienced for the ladies’ and men’s bowling tournament on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a good attendance, and everyone enjoyed themselves. Following were the winners of the competitions: Golf putting, Mr A. Fisher; quoits, Miss T. Scatter; and cake, Mrs Stormouth. Following wero the, results: First round: Miss Hay, Mrs J. G. C. Baker, Mr Pilcher, J. Kirk (s) beat Miss T. Scatter, Mrs Keith, E. Roberts, F. Duncan; Mrs Rountree, Mrs Smith, D. C. McCrostie, J. Hall beat Mrs Portcous, Miss Campbell, A. Smith, J. Scatter (s) ; Miss B. Scatter, Mrs Duncan, Mrs R. Cuppies, T. H. Walker (s) beat Mrs White, Miss Chilton, John Fisher, E. Lcckie (s) ; Miss O’Brien, Mrs Renowden, A. Fisher, G. Sinclair (s) beat Mrs Sinclair, Mrs Hall, T. Muir, W. J. McCulloch (a). In the second round Kirk beat Sinclair, Duncan bent McCulloch, Walker beat. Hall, and J. Scatter beat Lee kie. The final was played between Walker and Kirk, with two wins each, the latter winning 10 —5 in a game of five heads. At the conclusion of the proceedings Mr Sinclair, president of the Bowling Club, expressed his gratification at the manner in which the function had been supported, and stated that the funds were to go to the topdressing of the croquet green. He congratulated the winning rink on its performance, and called on Miss O’Brien (president of the Croquet Club) to present the prizes. Mr Kirk replied on behalf of the winning rink, and complimented the ladies on their play'. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies of the club.
