SOCIAL HELPERS

SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. , ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Southland Social Helpers’ Association was held last night when Mr C. S. Longuet presided over a large representative attendance. 'rhe annual report was as follows: “The collection last year was taken up on May 30, and collectors found more difficulty than usual in getting subscriptions owing to the general depression throughout the province. , The association was assisted in a number of new districts, and this, to some extent, offset the reduced assistance from other districts. The following table shows the amounts collected during the last three years:

£356 811 385 15 7 307 14 5 “The committee wishes to make it clear that as the Hospital Board derives its revenue from rates, it does not participate in the funds of the association. A proper, tion of the collection has been given to the • district nurse fund, but this is quite distinct from the Hospital Board fund. The societies benefiting by the activities of the association are, in most instances, helping town and country alike, and for this reason the claims of the association are provincial and not merely confined to the city. The association appreciates the support given by country districts, and it Is hoped that the country places assisting this year will be even more widespread than last year. The committee is not unmindful of all those who assisted in connection with last year’s effort, and in particular desires to record its thanks to all collectors, to those who willingly lent their cars, and to the Press for valuable publicity given. For special reasons, the street day during the past two years was held somewhat lute, but this year the committee hopes to have the collection in March, as formerly.” A credit of £2 4/1 was shown in the balance-sheet. Of the allocations made for the year ending January 31 last, the Children’s House Committee, Patients’ and Prisoners’ Aid Society, Plunket Society, St. John Ambulance, Victoria Home Committee, Sixpenny Clothing Club, Bluff Sailors’ Rest and the District Nurse each received £3O 5/-, while £ll 17/- went to the Stewart Island District nurse. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, Mr Longuet referred to the comparison of the takings during the past three years and said that, although last year’s amount was smaller than usual, it had to be somewhat expected, under the circumstances. However, the figures had kept up fairly well, and Mr Longuet said he hoped that this year’s sum would show an increase. Mr W. A. Ott, who seconded the motion, said he considered the society should be congratulated on the proceeds of the 1931 collection and paid a tribute to the organization of the canvass and, in particular, to the energetic efforts of Matron Ross and the nurses at the Public Hospital.
