CHILD ABANDONED

YOUNG WOMAN BEFORE COURT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, March 8. Ivy Thelma Leigh, aged 22, appeared in the Supreme Court for sentence for abandoning a child at St Barnabas Home, Khandallah, last month. Counsel said a Chinese admitted paternity and was willing to marry the girl who was also prepared to follow this course. Mr Justice Ostler was not prepared to think this desirable, and refused probation. He said the offence should be expiated and after that the girl could be free to act as she liked. He imposed a sentence of two years in the Borstal Institute.
