FARMERS NOT ALONE
PLEA FOR THE MANUFACTURER. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter). Wellington, March 8. “A great deal has been said about the needs of the farmers of New Zealand and as a farmer I want to put in a plea for another section of the community,” Mr J. Hargest said in the course of his Address-in-Reply speech in the House of Representatives this afternoon. > "I want to put in a plea for the manufacturer. A great many men are out of work and consequently the spending power of the community is reduced and the manufacturer has suffered accordingly.” The Legislation which was to come before the House might go a long way towards assisting the manufacturers of the country, Mr Hargest continued, and in his opinion the Government should make every effort to stimulate the manufacturing industries of the Dominion. In the past, as a result of her trade with Great Britain, New Zealand had had a favourable trade balance amounting to £15,900,000 in the Mother Country, but that trade balance had been dissipated in other parts of the world. “We should attempt to manufacture as much as we can for ourselves, while we widen our markets overseas.”
