GOLD FOR BRITAIN
SHIPMENTS FROM INDIA. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Calcutta, January 18. Gold is being rushed to Britain. Nearly £3,000,000 worth left Bombay by the last mail, which is the third largest shipment since Britain departed from the gold standard. ATTEMPT TO PREVENT EXPORT. (Rec. 7.45 p.m.) Delhi, January 19. • The steamer Rawalpindi left Bombay at the week-end for England with a cargo including bullion valued at £2,073,000. Congress condemns the Government for permitting the export of gold. Yesterday 16 Congress supporters, including two women, were sentenced to six months’ hard labour for picketing at the Royal Mint, Bombay, with the object of preventing the shipment of gold.
