FLOODS IN QUEENSLAND
ABNORMAL RAINFALL REGISTERED. SUGAR FARMS INUNDATED. (United I-Tess Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Brisbane, January 19. Twenty inches of rain were registered at Babinda in 48 hours, the cause being a cyclone over the eastern portion of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The St. Johnstone river, which is in high flood, broke its banks, flooding the countryside. Some sugar farms are 30ft under water. A number of houses have also been submerged, and business sections are threatened. The river rose 10ft in five hours. All traffic in the district has been suspended. Many people left their homes rather than spend the night in terror.
