MOTOR ASSOCIATION
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. APPROACH TO WAIMATUKU BRIDGE. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Southland Motor Association was held last evening. There were present: Messrs D. J. Wesney (president, in the chair), A. M. Macdonald, E. A. Nichol, P. A. Pearce, A. C. Ford, A. J. Campbell, C. Campbell, L. B. Hutton, M. M. Macdonald, J. R. Haigh, W. A. Stout, F. G. O’Beirne and Dr Stanley Brown. Eight new members were elected to the association. A communication from the Town Clerk, Invercargill, stated that the association’s complaint regarding the parking of buses on the east side of Dee street was under consideration. In reply to the association’s letter, the clerk of the Southland County Council wrote stating that the gorse growing on the sides of the road about two miles on the Fortrose side of Tokanui would be removed so that it would not interfere with road traffic. In regard to the south approach to the Waimatuku bridge, the clerk of the Wallace County Council wrote stating that in accordance with the committee’s suggestion the county engineer had been instructed to erect a railing at the south approach of the bridge. In a further letter the clerk stated that steps had been taken to cut back the broom obstructing the view at a corner on the Mossburn road. “In view of the financial stringency, I would like to suggest on behalf of myself and a number of other members that the executive should advocate that' the South Island Motor Union should hold its general meeting half-yearly instead of quarterly,” stated a letter from Mr T. F. Macdonald. “This would save a good deal of what we think to be unnecessary expense. In the earlier days of the union it might have been advisable to hold the meetings quarterly, but we think that now things are running smoothly, half-yearly meetings should be sufficient. The executive of the union could surely deal with any question that might arise. If meetings were held half-yearly, the annual meeting could be held in Christchurch and the other meetings in a town or city to be arranged.” Mr Macdonald said the constitution of the union demanded quarterly meetings and in the event of a change being desired the constitution of the union would have to be altered. Mr O’Beirne said that could be done easily if required, but he did not think it was necessary. The amount of work to be done required a quarterly meeting. It was decided to forward the letter to the executive of the union. Mr Guj’ P. Chewings wrote stating that there was a very bad creek about a quarter of a mile on the north side of Etal Creek bridge, which needed bridging. It was very deep and had a bad approach on a turn. The, creek crossed the Jacob’s River Valley road and the writer stated I hat he understood from good authority that if pressure were brought to bear, it was more than likely that the bridge would be erected, as funds were available. He asked therefore that representations be made by the association to the Wallace County Council. It was decided to refer the request to the Wallace County Council with a request that the work suggested should be carried out.
