INNINGS DEFEAT

HIGH SCHOOL CRICKET SOUTHLAND BATSMEN COLLAPSE WICKET TOO FAST (Special to the Tinies.) Oamaru, December 17. The Southland v. Waitaki High Schools cricket match concluded to-day and resulted in a win for the home team by an innings and 124 runs. Southland continued their innings with Spence and Carswell against the bowling of Smith and Laney. Both batsmen were very confident and scored very freely. Gillies changed the bowling fairly frequently, but the batsmen were little worried by the bowling of Kent, Reid and Mathias. When the score was 72, Kent clean bowled Spence who had the good total of 54 to his credit. L. Uttley came in and the century was reached before Mathias beat him. Laney came on again and the change proved fruitful, Carswell being caught behind by Francis. In his next over, Laney changed the score from two for 102 to five for 110, bowling Page and Rodger with successive balls. K. Uttley and Pickard stopped the rot with determined cricket. Ihese two brought the score to 127 at the luncheon adjournment. Uttley continued to bat excellently, scoring all round the wicket until he was caught off Reid by McArthur. Lee and Reid batted quite well for their double figures. Southland followed on with L. Uttley and Spence and no wickets, were down for 14 at the afternoon tea adjournment. On resuming, Spence did not last very long, being bowled by Laney. Rodger joined Uttley and the score mounted up slowly. At 38 Laney got an lbw against Uttley and Rodger did not last much longer. With the score at 52, a rot set in and seven ' wickets were down for 60 until Reid and Mackrell stubbornly held up their wickets, in fact the previous batsmen tried to play out time rather than to get runs. The position was fairly desperate when Lee was brilliantly caught by Kent off Watson. Strang came in, but did not last, being well stumped by Francis. Thus the innings closed for the small total of 76. The collapse of the visitors in the second ’ innings was rather surprising. The wicket was very fast and it wits due to this fact that the batsmen failed. The bowling was quite good, but never very deadly, Laney proving the most successful. The fielding was good. < The scores were: WAITAKI. First Innings 431 SOUTHLAND. First Innings. Spence b Kent 54 Carswell c Francis b Laney 26 L. Uttley b Mathias 17 K.
