WOODLANDS NOTES

SOCIAL EVENING. (From Our Correspondent.) On Monday Miss J. Purvis, who is leaving to be married was tendered a gift evening by members of the Literary and Debating Society and the Woodlands Tennis Club. During the evening items were given by Misses Mina and Edith Clark, who played pianoforte duets, Miss A. Sadlier, who gave two recitations and by Mr M. Reed, who gave several comet solos. Music for dancing was played by Mrs T. Wyeth while extras were supplied by Miss Clark and Mr Reg Anderson. At a suitable interval Mr J. Middlemis as president of the Debating Society, spoke of the services rendered that society by the guest of the evening. He said that they all regretted her departure but wished her every success and happiness for the future. Mr J. Trotter spoke for the Tennis Club which in losing Miss Purvis is not only losing a capable exponent of the game but also a valued club member. Mr E. Hargest voiced the feelings of the teaching profession. He eulogized the work of Miss Purvis and stated that Dacrc was losing a fine woman, an excellent teacher and a good sport. Mr James Orr replied on behalf of Miss Purvis, thanking the speakers for their kind remarks and fine presents. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought the function to a close. School Break-up. The public hall at Woodlands was filled to capacity on Tuesday evening for the annual school concert and prize giving. Mr W. Bell presided. The following is the programme : song, senior children; recitation, Syd Brown; part , song, sketch, infants; duct, Doreen and Roy Cundall; song, baby girls; recitation, Irene Griffin; drill, senior boys; duet, Betty Lyall and Eirlys Hargest; sketch, seniors. The second part of the programme was taken up with scenes in an old fashioned garden with the following items: Clap dance, To a Miniature, Painted Doll Song; Folk Dance, Part song. The standard of the items was high and reflected great credit not only on the children who acted splendidly in all items but also on those responsible for the training, viz, Miss M. Kane, Mr and Mrs E. Hargest. The dresses etc., in many items especially in the Old Garden Scene showed evidence of careful preparation and as the chairman said in his remarks helped considerably to make the function. The prizes were then distributed, those to the infant room by Mrs Stalker, a former teacher of the school. Std. VI- Eirlys Hargest, Roy Cundall, William Wyeth. Std. V: Frank Piercy, Irene Griffin, Gordon Muir. Std. IV: Pat Scully, Patricia Agnew, Ruby Bonney. Std. HI: Eric Tresidder, Winnie Renwick, Jean Bell. Std. H: Eric Lyall, Eugene Campbell, Laurie Walker. Std. I: Irene Griffin, Don Campbell, William Scully. All the primers received a book. Special prizes: Dux medal (donated by Mr J. Middlemis) : Eirlys Hargest. Captain of school voted by children: Iris Wyeth. Reading prize (donated by Mrs J. K. .Saxelby); William Wyeth.

Sewing prizes donated by Miss Kane: Std 1 and 2: Pearl Muir; Std. 3 and 4: Mary Campbell. Std 5 and 6: Mrs Hargest’« prize: Agnes McKinnefi Special progress: William Agnew. Before supper was dispensed Mr Bell, chairman of the School Committee, thanked all who had donated special prizes. He congratulated the teachers firstly on their work throughout the year and on the fine programme they had arranged that night. The parents he said were deserving of spec, ial thanks not only for turning out in such numbers that night but also for preparing the dresses etc. for the children. The school this year passed its 60th anniversary and he urged the ex-pupils to get together and hold celebrations in recognition of the fact.
