JUNIOR MATCH

HENDERSON SCORES 129. RODGER'S DOUBLE PERFORMANCE. X The junior game was full of brightness. Over 400 runs were scored by the two sides in four hours. Country batted first and surprised the Town juniors with their batting, the scoring being consistent throughout. Rodger top-scored with a hard hit 59 and completed a good double by taking seven wickets for 52 runs. Country scored 211 and Town replied with 193. The feature of the Town innings was the dashing batting of Henderson, of Old Boys, who scored 129. He hit hard and freely, yet not recklessly and scored 21 fours and five sixes. Mitchell (30) was the only other batsman to shape like getting runs. The batting of Henderson and Mitchell saved the Town side from rout. Messrs H. Drees and R. Taylor were the umpires. A BIG SCORE WAITAKI HIGH SCHOOL MAKE 431. CENTURY TO LANEY. (Special to the Times.) Oamaru, December 16. The weather was hot and sultry for the opening day of the Waitaki High School v. Southland High School cricket match. The wicket was well-nigh perfect and the outfield very fast. Waitaki won the toss and elected to bat. Dick and Gillies opened for the home team against the bowling of Pickard. Runs came slowly at first, due to the excellent fielding of the Southland boys. Both batsmen seemed set when Gillies played one on. Kent joined Dick who was batting very steadily and the score rose to 78 before the former let a straight one off L. Uttley past. Smith was next and runs came quickly until he was bowled off his pads, the score board now reading 111- —3—16. Laney joined Dick and the two brought the score to 176 before Dick was given out, caught behind. Dick’s innings was an invaluable strike. He hit eight fours and did not give a chance. Laney and Francis became associated in a bright partnership. Both played excellently, Francis driving to perfection. Not long after the afternoon tea adjournment, Francis, in attempting a sixer, was well caught by Page on the leg boundary off K. Uttley. He gave a bright display, hitting nine fours and a six. Laney continued well with Mathias and reached his century with a nice snick to leg. Soon after he was clean bowled by L. Uttley. The score was now 367 —6—lol. Laney’s was a good, careful innings, but the Uttley brothers made him a little uncomfortable. His score included 12 fours and a five.

Mathias batted well (particularly on the off) for his 56. Most of the other batsmen went for a "hit” and the innings closed for the large total of 43L The fielding of the visitors was excellent throughout a long and tiring day. With only a few minutes left to play, Spence and Carswell commenced the Southland strike against the bowling of Laney and Smith. Spence batted quite confidently in the brief time left, getting a four and two singles before stumps were drawn. The scores were:
