Mr James Hargest, M.P., leaves for Wellington by the express this morning, A London cablegram states that Mr Harold Braham, a son of Mr D. D. Braham, has been appointed to the Consular Service in China.

The death occurred at St. Clair, Dunedin, on Tuesday of Mrs P. C. Gray. The deceased resided at Gore and Balfour for many years, Mr P. C. Gray being a director and manager of the Gore branch of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., prior to retiring and taking up residence at Dunedin some time ago.

Mr W. J. Morrell, M.A., last week completed twenty-five years as rector of tho Otago Boys’ High School. At the vacation ceremony, congratulations were extended to Mr Morrell by Mr J. C. Stephens, chairman of the Board of Governors. Mr J. M. Fraser (president of the Old Boys’ Association), and Professor T. D. Adams.

After undergoing intensive training for nine days only, Mr J. S. McLean, of New Plymouth, made his first solo flight at tho Bell Block Aerodrome last week. It is his intention to sail for England early next month, in order to enter the Royal Air Force, for the purpose of which he holds papers signed by Squadron-Leader Wilkes, Director of Air Services in New Zealand.

Mr S. IL Poole, manager of the Foxton branch of the Bank of New Zealand, will retire on strperannuation after 38 years' service, on March 31 next. Mr E. W. T. Thane, manager of the Mangawcka branch, will be Mr Poole’s successor. Mr Poole joined the service of the bank at Nelson and subsequently held responsible positions in various branches of the bank in both islands.

A Palmerston North Press Association message states: The Prime Minister, accompanied by Dr E. Marsden, Director of Scientific and Industrial Research, visited Palmerston North yesterday for a technical inspection of the plant research station at Massey College and the grass trial areas. In the afternoon they visited Longburn to inspect the lambs of the Manawatu group export class for the Meat Board’s competition, subsequently returning to Wellington.

Mr J. C. Paterson, of Wendonside, has been approached by a large number of leaseholders to consider nomination as Crown tenants’ representative for the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr James Hargest from the Southand Land Board. After due consideration Mr Paterson decided to accept nomination. It will be remembered that Mr Paterson contested the seat 18 months ago and lost by a very narrow margin. He has been a delegate on two different occasions to give evidence before the Parliamentary Lands Committee in Wellington concerning improvements in leases. He has also been farming educational leasehold land for the past 20 years and has a thorough knowledge of leasehold matters.
