IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY. Fur Seal at Waikawa. During the past week a fur seal appeared on the Waikawa Beach and remained there for a short time. The seal, which was a small animal, made a camp in the shelter of the sandhills and appeared to be very docile when viewed by a nearby farmer. It was disturbed by some dogs later in the day and has not been seen since. * * * *

No Scarcity of Feed at Five Rivers. While many districts are suffering from the effects of the continued dry weather, properties at Five Rivers have feed in abundance. “On Mr J. E. Royds’s farm,” a stock man informed a reporter, “there are wonderful paddocks of clover. I believe he must have more feed than any man in New Zealand. All the Five Rivers settlers are Well off for feed.” * ♦ ♦ Kelvin Road. Favoured by the fine weather, good progress is being made with the surface sealing of Kelvin road. The first coat has been hud for almost the whole length of the road and it is anticipated that the remaining strip will be completed to-day. This will leave only the wide intersection with Gala street to be done. The second coat will not be put down until the first matures, which will probably take several weeks. * * 5 * Meat for Invercargill Unemployed. In the course of a telephonic communication with the Department of Health, Wellington, yesterday afternoon, his Worship the Mayor (Mr John Miller) was informed that 100 carcasses of meat would be forwarded by rail for distribution to the unemployed of Invercargill at Christmas. His Worship has accordingly made arrangements for the Central Relief Depot in Yarrow street to be opened on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week to enable the meat to be issued to applicants. * * * * Express Strikes Car. When the midday express from Dunedin was approaching the Edendale crossing yesterday it struck a car travelling from the direction of Invercargill which was almost across the line. As a result of the collision the car was practically wrecked. The guard and others in the vicinity rushed to the assistance of the driver of the car, Mr W. B. Paterson, of Stuart street, Dunedin, who was fortunate enough to escape with a gash on his head and slight shock. * * * . Haldane-Curio Bay Road. A resident of the Waikawa district reports that the Haldane-Curio Bay road, which has been popular with motorists who visit Waikawa Beach and Curio Bay during recent years, is now in better order than it has been for some years. The Haldane Estuary portion of the road has been reformed and is in excellent order, and four men have been working on the remainder of the road, which is now quite safe in dry weather. Seven cars passed over the road last Sunday and found the travelling reasonably good.

Spell of Dry Weather. Tlte announcement in yesterday’s weather forecast that general falls of rain were to be expected brought relief to farmers and city dwellers alike throughout the province where extremely dry' conditions have been experienced for some time. During the present week the heat in Invercargill has been intense and a light shower of rain last evening only served to cool the air, a much greater fall being required before any benefit will result to gardens in the city. Rain fell for two hours in Gore last evening, but much more is needed. Throughout the Eastern District an extremely dry spell has been experienced, and if the drought lasts much longer considerable damage will be done to feed. Around Riversdale and Balfour the lack of rain has been severely felt. Similar conditions have prevailed in other parts of the province to the detriment of both stock and crops.
