ENCOURAGING TRAVEL.

To the Editor. Sir, —The perusal of the articles “Travelling Light” was particularly interesting by showing how much enjoyment can be obtained without the expensive comforts too often considered essential for touring. I have read the articles with critical and much interest, because the writer’s first impressions about places which were familiar were so aptly sketched that one felt the unfamiliar would be equally true. Throughout the series the uppermost thought was, if thrifty travelling could yield so much enjoyment others would refrain from expensive recreations, and would spend more evenings at home,, in order to save up for a tour that provides pleasure for a lifetime whenever recalled. The vexations incidental to travelling soon give place to the recollection of happiness enjoyed. If the scries could bo issued as a book of modest price, it would form a useful propaganda fur the New Zealand Tourist Department, because every touring New Zealander would meet other tourists, and would extol the attractions of the Dominion which can compare favourably with any other country within my limited experience of globe trotting. Practice is so much stronger than precept when thrift is involved. —I am, etc., C. GILBERTSON. Invercargill, December 16, 1931.
