GORE Mrs A. F. Houston, of Dannevirke, returned north on Thursday. Mrs R. Fisher has returned from Dunedin. Mrs A. B. Caverhill leaves this morning on a short visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. Coakley, of Nelson, arrived by Saturday evening’s express to spend a holiday with Mrs D. Corcoran, Waikaka. On Tuesday evening of last week Mrs W. Kirk, Crewe street, entertained a few friends at bridge in honour of Mrs A. F. Houston, Dannevirke. Other guests were Mesdames . F. Wallis, J. E. Rogers, J. M. Boyne, F. Wallis junr., J. A. Edwards, T. L. Piller, J. Brown, 11. Oswin, D. Harvey, Miss Gibbs. An interclub match for the Fleming Shield was played at Invercargill by members of the Gore Croquet Club and Northend Club last Friday. The weather was anything but favourable and most of the games had to be played in the rain. The match resulted in a win for the Northend Club. The Gore players were Mesdames R. J. Teller, G. McLeod, J. Hodge, V. Burgess, G. C. Hamilton and J. A. Blaikie. The members of the Tramping Club made their final tramp for this year during the week-end. The tramp was made to Croydon Bush, over East Peak, and home by Mandeville road. It was a gloriously hot day and a welcome halt was made on the way home for a swim in the river. Amongst those making the trip were Misses M. Speden, B. Johnson, M. Shea, R. Hull, M. Ferris, M. and L Hoffman, C. Wallis, M. Whyte, Messrs D. L. Poppelwell, A. Grubb, R. Weir, Speden (4), Hamilton, Symons, D. Kelly, H. Day, W. Muir, Ferris (Invercargill), and A. Corbet. On Saturday afternoon the Gore Girl Guide Association held a delightful garden party at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. H. Aitken, Hyde street. The afternoon was spent in games, etc., and the Brownies staged a little play, “Willow Pattern Ware.” Those taking part in the play were dressed in Oriental costumes and all knew their part and told the quaint old story very prettily. 'After afternoon tea had been dispensed the Brownies made a presentation to Miss Aitken, Divisional Commissioner, for her interest in the Brownies during the past year. The Rangers and Guides had on display a number of well made frocks which are to be given to the Returned Soldiers’ Association for the children’s Christmas parcels.
