WINTON NOTES

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (From Our Correspondent.) At the monthly meeting of the committee of the Winton District High School, the chairman, Mr J. Gunn, presided over the following members:— Messrs J. H. Thomson, T. W. Brandford, J. Fathers, W. Hewitt, A. H. Rose, C. M. Lindsay and D. Wilder (secretary). The question of the dux’s medal was brought up and the chairman advised that as in past years Mr J. P. McWilliam had kindly offered to donate the medal. The secretary was instructed to write Mr McWilliam thanking him for his offer. The annual break-up and school concert will be held this year on Thursday evening, December 17. The Education Board wrote in connection with the blacksmithing, wool-classing and dressmaking classes, which it was proposed to include in the syllabus of work at the school, but owing to the additional cast that would be incurred by the committee it was agreed to take no further steps in the matter in the meantime. A letter was received from the trustees of the Winton Early Settlers’ Association donating the sum of £5 3/8 towards the school funds and at the same time expressing the wish that this money go towards the purchasing of a school bell. The rector advised having obtained a bell for the committee’s inspection from the Invercargill Fire Board. It was agreed to purchase the bell.

The secretary of the Winton Choral Society wrote forwarding a donation of £3 towards the school funds. It was decided to acknowledge the donation with thanks. The November attendance report was as follows: Primary—Average roll, boys 166, girls 130.5, total 296.5; average attendance, boys 155.3, girls 125.95. Secondary—Average roll, boys 22, girls 14, total 36; average attendance, boys 21, girla 13, total 34. It has since been decided to hold the school picnic at Colac Bay on February 10.
