MATAURA NOTES

SOCIAL EVENING.

Tn the Stewart Hall, Mataura, on Tuesday evening last members of the Mataura Football Club’s third grade team were the guests of the senior fifteen at a social evening. Mr James McAllister, who occupied the chair made congratulatory reference to the success the boys had had during the season in winning both the “Ensign” and “Wallis” Cups. This record spoke volumes for the keenness and attention they had paid to their coach Mr V. Henry.

During the evening a short toast list was honoured as follows: “Kindred Sports” proposed by Mr G. Amos and responded to by Messrs C. Badman (Angling), D, McCaughan (Football), M. Sutherland (Athletics), J. Russell (Tennis), and J. Leitch (Cricket). The toast of the third grade coach was entrusted to Mr J. Leitch who referred to the good services rendered by Mr Henry, who made suitable response. Subsequently a presentation of a set of military hair brushes was made by the captain of the team, Mr D. McCaughan, to Mr Henery as a token of appreciation. Proceedings were interspersed by vocal and instrumental items by several present and a happy function ended, with “Auld Lang Syne.”

The monthly meeting of the Mataura Brass Band Committee was held in the Band Room on Wednesday evening, the president Mr John H. Clark being in the chair. Messrs E. Smith, A. Bigwood, G. Bonney, W. Duncan, H. McCallum, E. Duncan (secretary-) were also present. After discussion it was agreed that the Band go to the Dunedin Contest on January' 23, 1932 provided all players are available. It was also resolved that the Band give a sacred concert on Sunday evening December 20, the proceeds to go in aid of charity' at Mataura. In the presence of an excellent attendance of members augmented by a contingent of 16 from Gore Lodge, sister N. Sinclair presiding, the fortnightly meeting of the Mataura Rebecca Lodge was held on Tuesday evening last. Much routine business was dealt with after which the members of Oddfellows Lodge No. 40 were received and entertained at cards, dancing and competitions. Hearty seasonal and fraternal greetings were exchanged between the three lodges and a happy evening concluded.

The quarterly and summoned meeting of the Loyal Mataura Falls Lodge No. 7616 Manchester Unity Independent order of Oddfellows was held in the Oddfellows Hall on Thursday' evening, P.G. Bro. D. Russell acting as Noble Grand, presided over a large attendance of members amongst whom was N.G. Bro. R. C. Barclay who was present for the first time since his accident and who was accorded a hearty welcome by' the brethren present. Seasonal greetings were received in a communication from P.G. Bro. A. Roy MacKenzie and it was agreed that the secretarywrite and reciprocate same. A large amount of sick pay and medical aid accounts were passed for payment and several reports on sick brethren were acknowledged. The principal item of business for the evening was the half-yearly election and installation of officers. It is many years since such keen rivalry has obtained for the various officers. The result of the various elections resulted. N.G. Bro. W. Knight, V.G. Bro. T. McVicor, E.S. Bro. S. M. Mac Gibbon, Warden Bro. B. Sutherland, Right Conductor P.G. Bro. A. Reid, Left Conductor P.G. Bro. T. Butler, Chaplain P.G. Bro. S. Wilson, Guardian Bro. G. McDonald, G. M. Bro. R. C. Barclay. These officers were duly installed into their respective offices by P.G. Bro. James Knight as installing master ably assisted by P.G.’s J. McDonald, P. Martin, T. Richmond and J. Gilder. All brethren returned thanks for the honour done them and assured the meeting of their desire to help on the lodge. Final arrangements for the children’s and parent’s party for Friday evening December 18 were completed and it was anticipated this innovation will be a complete success. It was also resolved that next meeting be held as usual. Prior to the adult meeting the usual meeting of the Juvenile Lodge was held when it was gratifying to see the standard of work done by the boys under the capable guidance of P.G. Bro. R_ W. Coltheni. The election of Noble Grand and officers of this lodge also was taken, the position of Noble Grand being now filled by Bro. R. Clark, P.G. Bro. T. Butler gave a comprehensive report on the juvenile meeting in Invercargill recently when some 40 juvenile and 40 adult members were present. Bro. Alan Mac Gibbon (who was once a member of this lodge) presided and an enjoyable programme of musical items was rendered. Prov. G.M. Bro. A. Roy MacKenzie intimated that substantial prizes had been promised for an essay on “Manchester Unity and the benefits derived from being a member of such, an order” and that it would be open for all juvenile members in the Southland District. During the evening three new members had been initiated which made a total of 23 for the year. After supper the meeting dispersed with tho Oddfellows Toast and Auld Lang Syne.
