RIVERTON LEAGUE

MONTHLY MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the executive of the Riverton League, held on Thursday evening, was attended by Mr J. A. Martin (chairman), Mrs W. Gunnion, Miss Hunt, Dr. C. H. Gordon, Messrs J. A. C. Mackenzie, A. E. Willett, R. J. Walker, T. King, T. R. Abercrombie, G. R. Berndtson, and A. D. Angus (acting-secretary). The Hon. A. Hamilton, Wellington, wrote with regard to the reading work to give access to the settlement land to be opened up in the Pourakino Valley, and stated that it had been decided to form the whole of the Fourakino Valley road instead of the whole of the Ermedale road as at first proposed. The chairman said the league had been fighting for the road for some time, and had eventually succeeded. He moved that their member be thanked for the assistance given in the matter.—Carried. In the course of his usual report, the chairman stated that the new motorists camp on the Recreation Ground, North Riverton, was now in readiness. Fire places had been erected and provision made for an adequate water supply. Arrangements had been made with Mr W. Anderson, who would act as caretaker for the camp, and from whom all particulars could be obtained as regards fuel, milk and other necessaries. The Motor Association had forwarded £6 towards defraying costs of alterations and additions to the new site, so that the league had not been obliged to pay any-, thing. The association had also forwarded £2 towards improving the approach at the reserve at The Rocks, and he thought the association should be thanked for its financial assistance.

The report was adopted, and on the motion of Mr Walker, seconded by Dr. Gordon, the secretary was instructed to write the doners, thanking them for their monetary help. On the motion of Mr Berndtson, seconded by Mrs Gunnion, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Messrs H. E. Philp and J. A. Martin for their services at the election in posting up results.

The chairman said that he had noticed that evening sports were being held in different centres with good results, and he would like an expression of opinion as to the advisability of starting such a gathering here. If they were a paying concern elsewhere, they should be worth a trial, seeing the league’s funds were getting low.

Mr Mackenzie said the evening sports were popular in many places and were well patronized by the public. The programmes included, besides athletic events, contests for bushmen, the chopping and sawing creating great interest. He thought the league should take the matter up and hold a sports meeting some time in February. He moved to that effect. The motion was carried.

Messrs R. J. Walker, C. A. Caigou, the chairman and mover were appointed a committee to draw up a programme. Mr Berndtson said the league had successfully conducted a swimming carnival in the past. The events had always attracted good competition, and he hoped they would support the acquatic event this year. It was resolved to hold the carnival in February, Mrs Gunnion, Miss Hunt and Mr Berndtson being appointed a committee to arrange preliminaries. The chairman said arrangements had been made for the sale of hot water on regatta day. The men in charge had been instructed to charge threepence for small receptacles and sixpence for the larger ones. In reply to a question the chairman stated that the council was making provision for better accommodation on the wharf on regatta day, and that the different parts in South Riverton would be cleaned up for the convenience of visitors in ample time before the festive season commenced. The chairman said that would be the last meeting for the year, and they would not meet again until February. An emergency committee had been appointed which would deal with any questions necessitating immediate attention. The times of stress through which they had been passing had been very severe, arid no doubt the public would have learnt a lesson, and would economize in the future. He concluded by expressing the hope that they would all have a pleasant Yuletide and a prosperous New Year. ,
