BENTLEY DISASTER

UTMOST GALLANTRY DISPLAYED. MINE SURVEYOR'S HEROISM. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, November 23. The affected part of the Bentley pit is being sealed up. The utmost gallantry was displayed by the rescuers and, when volunteers were asked for, 100 miners almost fought for an opportunity to risk their lives on behalf of their buried comrades. The disaster is one of the worst in Britain since the war. A tribute to the heroic rescue work in the colliery explosion was paid in the House of Commons by the Minister of Mines, Mr Isaac Foot, who said that, a full public inquiry into the causes would beheld as soon as circumstances allowed. The heroism of S. Temperley, assistant surveyor of the Bentley colliery, was revealed at the inquest when the secretary of the local branch of the Miners’ Union said that with stories of gallantry on all sides he particularly desired to draw attention to that of Ternperley, who immediately he knew that two men were left alive, without waiting for the rescue apparatus dashed into the blazing inferno and brought out one.
