OBITUARY

MR A. S. CAMPBELL. There passed away at Wanganui on Thursday, June 18, after a brief illness, Mr Alexander Samuel Campbell (intimately known as “Sandy”) only surviving son of the late Mr and Mrs John Campbell, “Campsie,” End street, Mat aura. The deceased was born at Mokoreta on December 31, 1882, and received his early education at the Gropers Bush School and latterly the Gummies Bush School. At the age of 14 years he entered the railway service ns a cadet at Dunedin. After serving in various stations in the Dunedin district he was appointed stationmaster at Pukeuri in 1908. In 1913 he was transferred to Christchurch and two years later he returned to Dunedin as clerk in the district traffic manager’s office in which position lie remained until February, 1925, when he was appointed chief clerk in the South Island divisional superintendent’s office at Christchurch. In March, 1928, he was appointed outdoor assistant to the district traffic manager, Dunedin, taking over the duties of indoor assistant in August of the same year. In December, 1930, he was transferred to Auckland as stationmaster, but he held this appointment only till'the beginning of May when he was made acting district traffic manager at Wanganui. Through his death the Railways Department has lost an. officer whose efficiency, tact and courtesy won for him the regard, not only of his colleagues, but of the business community generally. He was a man endowed with a splendid memory, especially for faces. Deceased married in December, 1908, Miss Catherine E. Bray, eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Arthur Bray, “Mt. Durden,” Waikouaiti, the marriage taking place in St. John’s Church on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary.

The funeral, which was largely attended, took place after the arrival of the north express on Saturday last, the place of interment being St. John’s Cemetery. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. J. Forum and the members of the Masonic Order also held a very impressive service, the pall-bearers being members of the same order. Beautiful floral tributes were sent from friends and also from the various centres by the railway staffs. The late Mr Campbell' is survived by his widow, who lost her mother three weeks, previously, and son, Mr Raymond M. Campbell, also his four sisters, namely, Mesdames W. Terry, Mataura; Alexander Murray, Ohai; H. C. Craig, Edendale; and A. E. McLeod, Makarewa Junction.
