BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) Early morning passengers from Bluff to Invercargill speak appreciatively of the Railway Department’s action in using the steam heating system in the carriages. Although the mornings have been particularly chilly of late, the trip to town has been robbed of all terrors by the department’s forethought. Owing to unfavourable weather conditions the Bluff Clay Bird Gun Club’s practice shoot, originally set down for Wednesday last, was postponed for a week. On Wednesday, July 8, the elub will hold a trophy shoot, details of which will be arranged at a committee meeting to be held shortly. There was a large attendance of members of the order for the fortnightly meeting of the local R.A.0.8. held in the Athenaeum on Thursday night. Primo J. McNamara presided. Murihiku Lodge (Invercargill) was well represented among the visitors, Primos Rusbatch, Gair, Walker and Sinclair being in attendance, the latter receiving the thanks of the lodge for supplying means of transport. There were also present several overseas brothers from the s.s. Huntingdon. The visitors were cordially welcomed by Primo McNamara. Important lodge business was expeditiously handled, including the election of officers for the ensuing term, and the initiation of a candidate into the mysteries of the order. In the hour devoted to harmony, items, which added greatly to the pleasure of the evening, were contributed by the following: Primo Tonkinson (song and violin solos), Primo Walker, Bros. J. Cathcart and E. Cameron (songs), Bro. N. Bradshaw (piano solos), Bros. F. Belsham and A. Giles (accordion and piano duets). Accompaniments were played by Bro. N. Bradshaw. The election of officers resulted: W.P., Primo C. Tonkinson; C.R., Bro. W. Cameron; C.M., Bro. R. Waddell; C. 6., Bro. E. Russell; C. Treas., Primo C. Barker, C Ch., Bro. S. Millin; A. 8., Primo J. McNamara; C.T., Bro. T. howler; C.C., Bro. W. Campbell; C.W., Bro. A. Giles; Asst. C.W., Bro. P. Smith. The anniversary services of the members and adherents of the Bluff Methodist Church took place during the week, being initiated by special services held on Sunday. The Rev. A. R. Penn occupied the pulpit and special music was provided by the choir. On Thursday the annual congregational social and concert was held in the church when there was a large gathering of members and friends. Mr Penn again directed the proceedings and a large and comprehensive vocal and instrumental programme was submitted which evidently gave great pleasure to the audience which demanded repetitions in many cases. The artists comprised Mesdames I. Walker, Creagh, Perkins, Robertson, Penn and Stewart, and Misses McKenzie, Hunter and Messrs G. Hicks, Ferguson and others. During the evening the annual report was submitted by the secretary who touched upon the leading events. affecting the church during the year and the various agencies in op,eration. A report from the superintendent of the Sunday school (Mr M. Hutton) showed the school- to be well staffed and attended and the work flourishing. The whole comprised a successful season and augured well for future success. Short addresses were given by the Rev. Me Waddell (Presbyterian) and the Rev. W. Ewart (Anglican), who referred to the happy relations which existed between tne religious bodies and their members.
