BASKETBALL

EASTERN DISTRICT MATCHES. Eastern District basketball matches were continued on Wednesday, the final games of the second round being played. Ex-High maintained its unbeaten record by defeating High School22 5, and is assured of the championship. St. Patrick’s defeated Pioneer 18—11. The St. Patrick’s A v. Pioneer A match was very evenly contested. At the end of the first spell St. Patrick’s was leading by only two goals, but in the second half they made no mistakes and with sure handling of the ball and accurate shooting were able to gain a substantial lead. For Pioneer the most outstanding players were E. Me •Stay and N. Beer, whose shooting was very good and who were well supported by P. Heads and M. O’Neil. It is difficult to single out any member of the St. Patrick’s team for special mention, as all played good basketball. The centres, however, were noticeable, intercepting well and passing swiftly. Although Ex-High was victorious, the High School girls put up a good fight, their opponents being bigger girls. The half-time score was B—s8 —5 in favour of Ex-High, ExHigh shoots were in good form, Miss Harvey shooting four goals, Miss Hollands 11 goals and Miss Fleming seven goals. Miss F. O’Connor scored three goals and Miss M. Boult two goals for High School. Miss S. Collins (centre wing) was outstanding for School. Miss S. Columb refereed. St. Patrick’s B beat Waimumu by 10 goals to 3. Mataura beat Pioneer B by 12 goals to 7. _
