Track and field athletic championships in the inter-university tournament com menced this morning with a strong southwesterly wind blowing and the tracks, after the recent rain, were dead. In the long jump D. Barker did 21ft 4|in and three times cleared over 22 feet in a number of jumps. J. E. Lovelock, Otago provincial champion, ran a well judged race to win the mile championship and F. S. Ramson ex-New Zealand hurdling champion won the shot putt in which the standard was poor. Shooting for the Haslam Shield, matches were fired on home ranges, Victoria College winning two, Auckland one, and Otago one. Victoria College won 'the Haslam Shield and scored three points for the Tournament Shield, Otago and Auckland each scoring one. The highest score for New Zealand was registered by J. H. Meakin (Victoria) with 129. The Tournament Shield points now are: Otago 7J, Victoria 4, Auckland 3J.
