ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES
THROWN OVER VIADUCT. (Per United Press Association.) Gisborne, April 6. Through his coat entangling in the wheel of a motor-jigger on which he was travelling across a viaduct between Otako and Rakauroa, a surfaceman, John Clement Windle (35) was dragged off the vehicle and cast to his death in the creek 55 feet below. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone. CYCLIST FATALLY INJURED. Hamilton, April 6. Fatal injuries were sustained by Vincent Alfred Patten (19), a farm labourer, when he was knocked down by a car while cycling to Ngaruawahia on Friday. He died last evening. FATAL COLLISION. Hawera, April 6. William Hansen, of Patea, about sb, wharf labourer, was killed instantly on the Manawpoue River bridge, Main South Road, shortly before noon when the motor cycle he was riding collided with a car driven by a Maori named J. Rowe, of Patea, who was proceeding to the Hawera Trots with two companions. Rowo states his car was first on the bridge and he stopped when Rowe approached from the other end. Hansen seemed to lose control of his cycle which swerved and struck the car’s mudguard and threw him, against the metal hoodwork. He received terrible head injuries. Hansen was returning’ alone from Patea from Teroti near Hawera where he had spent the week-end with his wife.
